The Australian Government is working to minimise the risk of the potential introduction of Didymo into Australia by publicising the risks and alerting the freshwater recreational sporting community. You can help by distributing the attached didymo information to your fishing community.
Didymo (Didymosphenia geminata), commonly called 'rock snot', is a freshwater alga that is causing serious problems around the world. Although not present in Australia, it is considered a significant pest being highly invasive.
Didymo has been discovered in various countries, including New Zealand, where it has invaded a number of waterways and is causing major concern for freshwater users. It poses a threat to Australia because of the potential transfer via used freshwater fishing and other equipment (eg wetsuits, waders).
Your help in distributing this information to the freshwater recreational sporting community is greatly appreciated.
