Gamebird hunting is currently permitted during set seasons in the Northern Territory, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.
In Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania duck season licenses are only issued to hunters who have successfully completed a Waterfowl Identification Test (WIT).
You do not have to sit the WIT more than once so potential hunters are advised to study the material that is available and to sit the test at your earliest convenience.
You have very little chance of being a successful game bird hunter unless to take an active interest in the appearance and habits of the entire range of game species and non-game species in Australia.
The WIT is your first step in becoming a skilled and ethical game waterfowl hunter.
New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania have contracted test services from DSE (Victoria), with tests conducted by any participating State being mutually recognised by the other participating States.
While NSW does not currently declare a duck season, the Game Bird Management Program administered by the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service allows some primary producers to legally protect their crops from the damage caused by wild ducks. A successfully completed WIT certificate is required for this activity.

Prior to every game bird season there is a rush on all available WIT testing officers and testing venues. It is quite common for applicants to find copies of "Ducks in Sight" are in short supply or the only available testing venue is on the other side of the State.
If you are over the age of 10 years and you have an interest in waterfowl, you may obtain your waterfowl identification certificate right now. Once you have the certificate, keep it safe and record your registration number where it can be found quite easily. In recent years changes to the way WIT’s are recorded have created some problems for hunters seeking a current duck hunting license in some areas. |
